Get Your New Scrubs Right Here! ‘Fit Fairs’ Scheduled Soon

scrubs2-300x120[1] Beginning in October, Memorial Hospital will join with their colleagues across UCHealth in adopting a uniform dress code that will help patients and their families clearly identify their caregivers.

While other UCHealth hospitals aligned with the new scrub policy months ago, Memorial delayed moving to uniform scrub colors until its financial position improved. With other UCHealth hospitals already aligned with the new scrub policy, Memorial completes the standardized dress code for clinical professionals throughout the system. In October, a vendor who supplies uniforms for UCHealth will host “fit fairs’’ at Memorial Hospital Central and Memorial Hospital North.

Employees may try on various brands of uniforms to find the best size and fit. Employees are encouraged to purchase their scrubs at the fit fair; however, orders may also be placed online after the fit fair. The vendor is Medline Industries (www.suitestyles.com). Memorial employees will receive an allocation from UCHealth to offset some of the cost of purchasing new scrubs. The dollar amounts vary, based on whether an employee is full-time, part-time or a PRN employee. Those allocations will be added onto the employee’s account with the uniform vendor during the week of Oct. 5. “

When you look at it from a patient’s perspective, they’re already nervous and stressed,’’ said Eric Spongberg, an administrative fellow who is directing the scrubs project for Memorial Hospital. “For us to have signifying colors for each clinical profession makes it easier for patients to identify who their caregivers are.’’ UCHealth has adopted these colors for clinicians:

  • Navy Blue – nurses, including RNs and LPNs
  • Gray – clinical professionals, including pharmacy, respiratory therapists, technologists, and physician assistants
  • Caribbean Blue – rehabilitation professionals, including PTs, OTs, speech therapists, and rehab aides
  • Wine – clinical support staff
  • Royal Blue (Polo Shirts) – care team assistants
  • Jade Green – procedural areas such as the OR. These scrubs will be provided by the hospital.
  • Pediatrics Friendly Pattern – Pediatrics will also have the option of choosing pediatric friendly scrub tops.
  • Pants — All employees have the option of wearing either black scrub pants or pant scrubs that match their top. Pants do not have to be purchased through the program’s vendor.

To maintain the professional look of the new scrubs, the new policy also allows employees the choice to wear solid white, gray, or black shirts under their scrub tops. Under the new guidelines, hoodies, fleece vests/jackets or patterned t-shirts are not allowed. Spongberg said it is another example of how UCHealth is maturing as a system. “It’s standardizing a look across the entire system. We are looking to give each patient the best care possible whether they visit Memorial Hospital or Poudre Valley Hospital, and having a standardized dress code brings us one step closer to that goal,’’ he said. “This has become a national, standardized best practice to help improve patient satisfaction and patient safety.’’ Employees will find the allocation from UCHealth in their accounts when they purchase from the vendor. The amount of the allocation varies, depending on whether an employee is full-time, part-time or a PRN employee. The allocation is as follows:

  • Full-Time – $71.46
  • Part-Time – $50.29
  • PRN – $29.12

“It is important to note that the stipend is intended to offset a portion of the cost for employee scrubs. If employees spend more than their allocation, the employee will be asked for a credit card number to cover the amount that exceeds the stipend amount,’’ Spongberg said.
